CYBER-FRAUD Are You Safe? PART 2

16:51 Add Comment
E-banking fraud is an issue being experienced globally and is continuing to prove costly to both banks and customers. E-commerce, on-line banking and related technologies have resulted in millions of dollars of financial transactions taking place across network connections and as banks expand their array of online services to clients, the risk of internet computer fraud (ICF) increases and the risk landscape changes.
CYBER-FRAUD Are You Safe?
Financially motivated high-profile attacks have been observed across the globe with the growing patronage of e- banking services and its anticipated dominance in the near future. Some of the known factors that contribute to the acute problem of security must be addressed.

Our first article on Cyber Fraud served as the first in a series of articles that seek to enlighten you on what it is and how it can be mitigated. This second article will take a more detailed look at some of the issues that might help you understand Cyber-Fraud. In modern times banks are not so often robbed because money is not only kept in bank vaults. In up-to-the-minute computer technologies and data networks a lot of money exists in cyber space. Banks have to adapt to modern trends of doing business electronically and at the same time protect themselves against cyber-crimes.
The first recorded “cyber- crime” took place in the year 1820! That is not surprising considering the fact that the abacus, which is thought to be the earliest form of a computer, has been around since 3500 BC in India, Japan and China. The eon of modern computers, however, began with the analytical engine of Charles Babbage. Of late all banks have implemented cyber banking in one way or the other.
Electronic banking has grown significantly in recent years. Banking institutions have already introduced mobile banking products in partnership with mobile operators and the number of banking institutions venturing into mobile banking are on the increase.

The, volume of mobile payment transactions and the volumes of internet transactions also increased substantially. However, as more businesses and customers launch their money into cyberspace, opportunities for 21st century tech-savvy thieves also increase.

While on the one hand, are coping with global developments in technology, on the other hand cyber fraud perpetrators are on the look-out.

At global level ICT advancement has immensely contributed to economic development including finance and banking. The internet is one of the fastest-growing areas of technical infrastructure development. Today information and communication technologies (ICTs) are omnipresent and the trend towards digitization is growing. Due to the pivotal roles of banks in the growth and economic development of any nation, it has become very necessary to protect these institutions from the antics of fraudsters. However, it is the same ICT systems used by the banks which are negatively utilized by perpetrators of fraud. The increased use of ICT such as computers, mobile phones, internet and other associated technologies are the routes which gave rise to lot of constructive work as well as destructive work. The destructive activities are considered as ‘electronic crime’ which includes spamming, credit card fraud, ATM frauds, money laundering, phishing, identity theft, denial of service and other host contributing crime.

While straight-through-transaction processing has afforded new levels of efficiency for financial institutions and greater convenience for consumers, it also creates new opportunities for fraud, as transactions are faster, do not require any human intervention, and are often “anonymous”. Cyberspace has proved resilient to attacks, but the underlying dynamic of the online world has always been that it is easier to attack than to defend. On that note, the contemporary approach at all levels on how to preserve, protect and govern the common good of a trusted cyberspace must be developed, since the growth of the information society is accompanied by new and serious threats. The rising of such threats at various stages is because of the explosion of online banking coupled with the acceptance by consumers to disclose sensitive information over internet.

Electronic fraud is committed in different ways.

In the next article we will be looking at Types of Cyber-Fraud.

CYBER-FRAUD -Are You Safe?

Do you own a smart phone, tablet, thumb drive or any sophisticated gadget that you use to communicate with the world? If so then read on as Doctor Shewangu Dzomira explains what all about cyber-fraud. Digital forensics is not just about computer any more.
The problem is that digital forensics is not just about computer any more – smart phones, tablets, thumb drives and more each present unique challenges in accessing data.
It is an endless game of “cat and mouse” between banks and cybercriminals. There is a virtual arms race taking place online between financial institutions and cybercriminals who as soon as the bank deploys a new process or technology to prevent online fraud, they find a weakness to exploit. Cyber banking has recently become a necessity rather than a “superfluity” service across the banking industry. As a result recent developments have shown that most of brick and mortar banks are evolving themselves by shifting their focus towards up gradation of their own e-banking capabilities.
Sherlock Holmes is considered to be the first forensic accountant, the term coined by Peloubet in 1946. Kautilya, from India was the first economist to openly recognise the need of a forensic accountant after mentioning the famous forty ways of embezzlement during the ancient times. In the Egyptian times, 3300-3500BC, commercial transactions were recorded on clay tablets, which would be scaled and if later found to be tempered with, investigations would take place. Any discovered employee crime attracted punishment of a fine, mutilation or death in some cases.

Today, the challenge of combating fraud directed against a business is increased by the diversity and deceptive nature of workplace fraud and a company may realize too late that it has been victimized. Fraudsters, hackers and cybercriminals are refining their methods for account takeover and compromised identities that target bank’s customers and employees. The growth of complexity and access to technology has made susceptibility to ‘hi-tech’ crime which is a threat to businesses in the financial domain where the risk is very high. Also, cybercrime is on the rise; large-scale fraud attacks, consumer data breaches and politically motivated Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks on financial institutions are costing them billions of dollars annually.

Information Communication Technology (ICT) has brought unintended consequences in form of different cybercrimes which have affected different industries and the banking sector is one of them which have witnessed debit/card fraud, phishing, funds transfer, account takeover, identity theft, DoS and many others. One other problem is that digital forensics is not just about computer any more – smart phones, tablets, thumb drives and more each present unique challenges in accessing data.

It high time we become vigilant. What information are you you releasing to the world. Always think before you log on.

TIPS AND TRICKS: How I Improved My Alexa Ranking

01:41 Add Comment
I have been working very hard to improve my Alexa ranking and it has been a great learning process. Never have I had an opportunity in my lifetime to learn as much as I have over the past two months. I am happily narrating how I achieved on the travel through a long road to success. In my own view achievement of an Alexa ranking requires hard work and dedication and it is not a one-time event. It is a continuous learning process in which negligence will be of catastrophic results.
I have been working very hard to improve my Alexa ranking.
My introduction to the blogging world has been very fast and exciting. I am greatly indebted to the tutorship of Oudney Patsika who took me through the basic tenets of blogging, especially building my Google searchability and Alexa ranking.

The following is what Oudney Patsika taught me.

1. Writing Engaging And Original Content Articles
Oudney Patsika taught me to write attractive and unique content articles. Writing original content has empowered me to be an analytic person who can see a story within a story. I have during the course of my day to day writing developed creativity. I was assured that Google rewards quality original content and I did exactly like I was taught. I immediately got a good ranking which I am quite impressed with. I am keeping the momentum up as I see how well my ranking has improved through Alexa ranking.

2. Building Of Back links (Both Internal And External Links)
Back links have enabled me to keep track of other pages on the web that link to my posts. If I write a post that Oudney Patsika finds attention-grabbing, he would then go into his own blog and write a post of his own about it, linking back to my original post. My Blog's post would automatically show that Oudney Patsika has linked to it, and it will provide a short extract of his text and a link to his post. What this all means is that it becomes a way of intensifying the comment feature such that related discussions on other sites can be included along with the regular comments on a post.

Both links have assisted me in ensuring that the synergies pull up my name in terms of searchability. Some of the back links with established websites have pulled my blog to rank for certain words.

3. Key Words
In order for Alexa ranking improvement to take effect Oudney Patsika taught me how to make the best use of trending words within the headlines. A good example is found in my series Cecil The Lion: The Lion in You and Crucial Conversations Series. Use of key works has made me realize the real value of a word within the blogging world.

4. Learning What Works
I have made good use of statistics as given by Google Analytics. These provided me with the basic understanding of stories that could potentially go viral. Analysis of statistics assisted me in identification of what the readership wants. Learning requires patience and dedication. I learnt to do what works through continuous improvement.

5. Search Engine Optimization
I had to make use of search engine optimization and to follow best practices in maximizing output. For a favorable Alexa ranking, Oudney Patsika taught me to ensure that I always got user experiences with my site to enable improvement on areas where there may be challenges. It is not only about searchability but also user experience that matters on a site.

Satisfying my audience requirement for quality content is my number one priority. Search Engine optimization is maximized when I write compelling, engaging, informative, relevant and entertaining content. I have learnt to stand out among the rest of the bloggers. I strive to provide credible news from an authoritative resource. With Oudney Patsika’s assistance I have managed to create the kind of blogs, articles, press releases and website pages that people love to share with their friends and family. A look at my article on MH370 Debris Found will tell a different story altogether giving my readers informative reporting.

6. Thinking Outside The Box
Alexa ranking requires well-structured and well though articles. Oudney taught me how to think outside the box and hence write analytical stories for the excitement of my readership. Oudney Patsika taught me the art of thinking outside the box for diversity of views on a particular field. A recent article on which I had to use the skill of thinking outside the box was the Chitungwiza Municipality on disposing off their infrastructure to employees. We went on to provide a basis of argument giving an insight to the reader on how best the Municipality could have handled that situation.

7. Write Regularly
Ever since I started blogging, I have written consistently posting meaningfully written stories. Each time I take a walk I am now always armed with my camera and on the lookout for stories to include on my blog. Apart from having fun blogging my Alexa ranking is on the rise and it is my ambition to one day rank with the best. I will therefore continuously improve until the goal is achieved. I am writing regularly in search of excellence and perfection.

8. Capitalization of Social Media
In line with improving my Alexa ranking, with the assistance from Oudney Patsika, I have managed to set up numerous accounts linked to my blog all I have subscribed to all the major sites and have been consistently posting articles. For a good Alexa ranking Oudney recommended and assisted me in installing widgets for Twitter, Flipboard, Instagram, Google Plus, Facebook, LinkedIn, Tumblr and Pinterest. These have proved to be very effective tools that can assist a blogger to reach out to a larger audience. These tools have different strategic approaches and are quite effective.

9. Installation of Alexa Toolbar
To facilitate the improvement of my Alexa ranking I had install an Alexa toolbar to monitor my ranking on a regular basis. This was solely to ensure that I was aware of the requirements either to shift upwards or downwards in terms of the readership requirements. My Alexa toolbar will always remind me of the ever changing requirements for quick thinking and implementation of strategies in managing my blog.

10. In order to track my Alexa ranking I had to monitor my every statistic on a regular basis to ensure that when being more aggressive is required, I shift accordingly.

Oudney Patsika instructed me to write or host content by Alexa. This I have done and there you are! I am now being counted as one of the serious bloggers.

Mark Zuckerberg’s hint about another multi-billion dollar untapped Facebook opportunity generated a lot of interest among readers. One of the readers joked that the article about untapped opportunity was the better devil in comparison to article on retrenchment and job losses.

Start making things happen instead of waiting for them to happen. Technological evolution is not happening randomly. To breakthrough, study the patterns of technological evolution. Entrepreneurial doors are always opening at specific points in the evolution. As Facebook, Google or any other company does well, always remember that there is something in there for you too.

I will certainly help those who are interested in setting up their own websites and most important of all assist them in monetising their sites.

Monetisation
Please note that this is not a new concept at all. It has been there even before I knew how to navigate my way into the internet. If you want to prove that these concepts have always been existent just from a layman’s point of view google AdSense and see what it means.

Willingness To Learn
The concept of online business is very simple if you are prepared to learn and persevere. Find yourself a good individual who can do simple code for you. At first it was very intimidating to me but I am grateful to my mentor Oudney Patsika who taught me. I don’t even view myself as an expert. I submit to him and I am always willing to ask questions as explained in the previous article. If you are unlucky and find the real IT guys you may be asked to pay for something that you won’t even understand.

Success In Online Business.
To succeed in online business always be prepared to exploit established company weaknesses. Find out what these companies are not giving you and strike on those weaknesses. As an online entrepreneur I don’t focus my efforts on what established companies do best. Instead I pounce on their weaknesses. I make it easy for my clients to do something in a very simplified way. I make calls to people struggling with their work. I support people that I have given a service to. I try and ensure that I attend to each and every need raised by my clients.

It is possible to make it happen. What is worthy of you? Be hungry and be relentless in pursuing these business opportunities. Always remember You cannot climb the success ladder with your hands in the pocket. By: Arthur Mutambara

My honest and sincere questions to you.
If Facebook is realising and harnessing every potential dollar value of each individual on their platform, what are you doing as a user of their products?
